The story of Julian Payne is a simple story. Although there’s nothing simple about what he does and how he does it, we wanted to take you into the Hair Lifestyles of Julian Payne Celebrity Master Barber and owner of H.L the Traveling Royal Barber Service Co.
At 33 years of age Julian Payne has taken the barbering industry a cut above the competition. With fifteen years of experience under his belt, he has created a niche in the barbering industry that cannot be ignored. He is originally from the east coast state of Maryland where he honed his craft for eight years after attending Ohio State School of Barbering and Cosmetology after high school in 1992.
After his completion of barbering school, Julian immediately returned to Maryland to obtain his Journeyman’s license and later his Master Barber’s license. He started working in a small barbershop in Laurel Maryland where he quickly gained some clientele and got a sense of the business of barbering. Julian, being fresh out of barber school knew there was a lot to learn, like customer service and building a steady clientele was a key component in the business of barbering.
Julian made his mark in the city of where he would later start his traveling barber service in 1998. Julian first started taking notice of this unique but simple niche by traveling to his uncle who owned a engineering cost analysis company on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington D.C. His uncle one day asked if he’s ever thought about expanding the service. I would say that the answer is quite apparent now. Julian was now aware that traveling to the client meant that he would have scheduled his clients down to the minute and factor in traffic.
He was also aware that this was a way he could increase his prices and possibly do less work. People like doctors, lawyers, car salesmen and even people like you don’t have the time to sit in a barbershop for 2-3 hours on your only day off to get a haircut. Julian would come to your office and at times even to your home. Although the concept went good on the first run, overtime Julian noticed a flaw, all customers must pay! At times some customers would ask for credit on the service which made it difficult for Julian to maintain the service with them.
Many ups and downs were a part of the new concept, but they eventually worked out. Julian knew that it was time for a change from the norm, he had out grown the city of Laurel, and M.D despite business doing well in the barbershop he wasn’t happy with the routine. One day Julian was driving home and it just felt all too familiar, he knew he needed to take his talent and ideas to a major market like New York or Los Angeles. He had his sister in L.A and some family in New York; so his choice wasn’t easy. It just came down to better weather. He talked with his wife at the time and mother and they were all for it, he had a yard sale and six months later he made the transition.
In 1999 Julian moved to Los Angeles Ca, to make a new start. He started in acting and modeling which did o.k. but did not pay enough in the start. With a wife and a new baby on the way Julian had no time to sit on a TV set for twelve hours. He decided to focus on his passion. His first job in L.A was at the Barbershop Club on the world famous Melrose blvd. This barbershop had a 1940’s style that was a dark and had the smell of talcum powder, cigars and wood. The Barbershop Club quickly recognized Julian’s talent to cut any texture of hair that walked thru the door. He was also especially known for the best straight razor shave in California.
Julian developed a talent of barbering from his Grandfather. He also was a celebrity Master Barber, Julian also inherited the talent of art from his dad who was a graphic artist for the Comptroller of the currency in Washington D.C. One year later after his move to the city of L.A Julian was cutting everybody who was somebody in the entertainment business, and business was good. Later he decided to take the chance to go full steam ahead one hundred percent and go with his traveling barber service. This opened up many doors for him, like being invited to exclusive industry parties, Hollywood movie premiers, music video shoots and photo shoots. This was just the beginning of his travel services; Julian really began to dig deep into the actual concept of how the business could expand and be developed on a marketing level.
As usual Julian took his idea to the next level, buy understanding that he had to secure a major break in order for this concept to be taken seriously. One of Julian’s understudies and friend had one of his clients moving to Los Angeles. He knew his client would like to have a great barber and Julian was happy to take the referral. Julian finally hooked the new guy up and at the time Julian had finished his proposal of the mobile barbershop. We all know about the conversations of most barbershops everyone ask questions about each other. Julian finds out his new client is over events marketing for Boost Mobile and he heard about the mobile barbershop tour Julian had been planning. Julian delivered the package to him that moment. He looked it over and immediately loved the concept andelected to take it to his boss at the head office in Irvine Ca,. Six month later he was negotiating the budget for the first mobile barbershop tour in history & first barber to have a non-exclusive contract with a major corporation. June 2006 Julian Payne along with his cousin Maurice Sumner did a fifteen city tour with the AND-1 Street Ball team sponsored by BOOST MOBILE
